Fire Testing and Approvals
With thousands of full-scale fire tests completed, the HI-FOG® Water Mist Fire Protection System is the world’s most tested water mist solution. HI-FOG® has been tested across a wide variety of applications and holds a large number of type approvals from recognized approval authorities.
During the early 1990s, when HI-FOG® was first launched commercially, there were no standards for water mist technology; indeed, the only way to display the capability of HI-FOG® was to conduct full-scale fire tests case by case. Yet today, more than twenty years later, the only acknowledged way to evaluate the performance of a water mist system is through full-scale fire testing. The difference between now and the early days is that for many applications the tests are now standardized and lead to relevant type approvals.
Marioff testing has formed the basis for many international standards. The company’s active involvement in the standard making process began in 1991 when company representatives attended the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Fire Protection sub-committee meeting, which was charged with developing regulations for alternative sprinkler systems for passenger ships. Marioff specialists have served on the IMO sub-committee almost every year since, and today practically all areas onboard a ship are covered by standardized fire testing.
Working with the International Community to Ensure Fire Safety
In terms of land operations, Marioff has participated in the standardization work of the NFPA 750 water mist committee (USA) and CEN water mist Working Group under Technical Committee CEN/TC191 (Europe) since their inception in 1993 and 1999 respectively. Marioff’s expertise has been further utilized through the formation and implementation of water mist standards in different countries.
Due to its extensive testing, Marioff has a large portfolio of type approvals for different applications both at sea and on land - including a variety of marine type approvals from all the major classification societies.
